I was invited by my sister, Alicson, who lives in Tasmania to join
her and her husband Shane on this walk. Unfortunately Shane had to
pull out due to an injury. But this meant he could help with the
logisitics - driving us to our start at Lake St Clair and then
picking us up at Cradle Mountain. Many thanks to Shane for this.
Gear considerations - Basically one set of clothes to walk
in, and one to ear inside the huts. We expected wet cold weather and
that is what we had. I mainly walked in a light thermal top, a
shirt, a light fleece, and long johns and shorts below. Often there
would be an outer layer - rain jacket and overpants. A beanie was
constantly worn. I had taken a sun-hat to Tasmania but left it out.
In the huts, I had a spare thermal top, a down jacket and fleece
pants. Footwear - I took walking shoes with thick socks and gaiters.
These were fine, but I often had wet feet by the end of the day. My
sister wore boots and her feet stayed a lot drier. I took light
gloves, which I wore most of the time, and also heavier mittens
which I wore one and a half days. My feet were only cold when
starting out on the two days I had to put on wet socks and shoes on
two mornings. Those were after spending the nights in two huts where
the heaters were not working. I had dry socks for the huts, but
would have liked something warmer for walking around in - like hut
slippers. We both took trekking poles, which were very useful for
balance in slippery conditions. We also took microspikes - with we
used on the last day. They were very useful!
Camera Gear - I took a Sony full frame mirrorless camera with
a 16 - 35 mm f4 lens, a 50 mm f 2.8 macro lens (for fungi) and an
old Pentax M series 150 mm f 3.5 lens with adapter. I also took a
small tabletop tripod for fungi and waterfall photos.
