Tempe Bird Survey and Cooks River Birds – 10 October 2026

I got up early and headed to Tempe Wetlands for the Tempe Birdos monthly survey. The weather was not the best – dark and gloomy with light rain. With slightly better light at Tempe Reserve, I joined the group surveying there.

But before heading to the Reserve, I went down to the pond and photographed a family of Dusky Moorhens.

At Tempe Reserve, we spotted a Little Heron –

Magpies

The tide was high and the salt marsh was full.

The rain kept many birds away. We saw very few waterbirds.

The saltmarsh from the other side –

A Little Black Cormorant with its head down.

After morning tea, the weather improved a bit, so I walked along the Cooks River all the way to Canterbury Road.

Other birds were nesting. Magpie Larks –

And another nest –

Little Pied Cormorant

At Marrrickville Golf Course, I spotted a pair of Tawny Frogmouths. They were not nesting.

And another nesting pair of Tawny Frogmouths at Ewen Park –

I looked for more Tawny Frogmouths at the Boat Harbour and the Leslie Muir Reserve but had no success.

Pandemonium broke out when a Brown Goshawk appeared. It was being chased by an Australian Raven.
