Greenway Bird Survey – 14 October 2026

I took part in the bird survey along the Hawthorne Canal section of The Greenway – between Taverners Hill and Hawthorne Light Rail Stations. The weather was dull and gloomy with threatening rain.

Despite the dull conditions, we had an interesting survey, including some mammals as well.

At Taverners Hill Light Rail Station, we did not see too many birds except for a few Noisy Miners –

Down below in the canal, there were a pair of Royal Spoonbills looking in vain for food.

Red Wattlebird

Our =bird observing was interrupted when a cyclist rode past on a Penny Farthing.

Further along, we saw disturbance above us. It was a Ring Tailed Possum. It was being harassed by a Currawong.

Near Marion Street, we saw this Magpie Lark –

A Willie Wagtail was foraging nearby.

The Willie Wagtail was hovering near some spider webs. It was not after spider webs for Halloween, but rather nesting material.

Above, we spotted the Magpie Lark’s nest, bulging with three chicks.

And at Marion Street, we saw this Australian Raven nest.

Great Egret

High above was a Pelican –

Australasian Darter

On the last survey, we had spotted a White Faced Heron nest. Now we could see a parent with two chicks.

Little Corellas

On the other side of the canal, we saw a single Grey Headed Flying Fox –

Rainbow Lorikeet

High above was a raptor. Probably a Brown Goshawk.

The survey finished with coffee at Dog Area cafe. After that i walked back along the Greenway. Here are some more photos.

The Australasian Darter had moved.

Laughing Kookaburra

And two Tawny Frogmouths on nests. The first one at Gadigal Reserve –

And the second at Little Street –
