Birds at Sydney Olympic Park – 16 August 2020

I headed to the Sydney Olympic Park area to look for and photograph birds. It was a fairly quiet day compared to other visits.

I first visited the Mason Park Wetlands, and here I spotted a Black-fronted Dotterel searching for food on the mudflats.

And here is one of several Pied Stilts

I next headed to Lake Belvedere. Here is an Australian Darter

The main waterbird refuge at Bicentennial Park was fairly quiet. There were lots of nesting  Black Swans, and plenty of ducks and Pied Stilts, but not many photographic opportunities. I then made my way to Wentworth Common and The Brickpit.

I then went to the Woo-la-ra to look for raptors. I spotted what I though twas a Brown Goshawk a fair way away and flying further away –

I had lunch on top and waited a fair while to see if any other raptors would make an appearance. As I was leaving, I bumped into Gavin, a bird photographer I had met a few times earlier, and very recently at Emu Green. He was heading up Woo-la-ra, also to try and photograph raptors. As we were talking, we spotted a Sea Eagle flying nearby. So I denied to join him for a while.

We first climbed the hill that lies to the north east of Woo-la-ra. It is higher and offers a better view. We waited on top for a while, but no raptors flew past. We then went over to Woo-la-ra and it was the same – too quiet.

I left and went slowly past the Waterbird Refuge in Bicentennial Park. Here are some Black Swans

And a Royal Spoonbill that was trying to sleep –
