Raptors at Long Reef – 2 August 2026

Despite a late start, due to attending a bird survey in Wolli Creek Regional Park, I had a very worthwhile visit to Long Reef.

When I arrived, it was relatively quiet, but then a Nankeen Kestrel appeared and started hunting.

An Osprey made an appearance –

The Kestrel moved off, so I headed back to the rock  platform.

Sooty Oystercatcher

Then an Osprey appeared and landed not far way on the rock platform and started bathing.

It then took off –

The Osprey then left.

White Faced Heron

Then a White Bellied Sea Eagle arrived.

It went out to the island, and an Osprey appeared and tried to drive the Sea Eagle away.

I think the presence of the SeaEagle had deterred the Ospreys from fishing in the area.

Pied Cormorant

I was leaving the Headland, and up the top, when the Sea Eagle appeared again.

It had been an interesting visit.
