Fungi at Sassafras Gully – 19 June 2021

This was the day that I was hoping to go to Bola Creek in Royal National Park for a fungal survey. I thought conditions for fungi should be quite good. But the day was cancelled due to a poor weather forecast. And looking at the rain radar during the day, this was  wise decision, as it seems to rain there most of the day. But studying weather forecasts, it looked like the rain would be confined close to the coast, so I decided to travel to Springwood and see it any fungi was out at Sassafras Gully.

Hygrocybe stevensoniae

This worked out well – no rain during my visit and plenty of fantastic fungi to see and photograph.

I was mainly after waxcaps and was certainly not disappointed. Here is some that I found –

Porpolomopsis lewilliniae –

I found two of these near a small creek on the way down to the main creek.

I saw a lot of red waxcaps. Many of them had fallen to bits after getting waterlogged from recent rain, but some were still fresh.

Hygrocybe sp.

I think these are Hygrocybe miniata

Perhaps Hygrocybe cantherellus

Hygrocybe sp. –

Hygrocybe virginea –

Hygrocybe leucogloea –

Hygrocybe astatogala –

I found two of these bell shaped waxcaps. I have seen them before several years ago. The bell shape of the cap seems to be a characteristic rather than due to rain or other factors. Hygrocybe sp.

Hygrocybe aurantiopallens –

Hygrocybe stevensoniae –

Gliophorus graminicolor –

Hygrocybe pseudograminicolor –

Humidicutis sp.

The ones above look like they could be the same as the Ferndale Park Humidicutis sp. or perhaps Humidicutis viridimagentea. Another green species is Humidicutis helicoides but I don’t think they are that.

This one could be Hygrocybe batesii –

Hygrocybe sp.

Hygrocybe sp.

Hygrocybe sp.

The ones above were growing near each other and were very small. Perhaps Hygrocybe batesii.

Hygrocybe anomala –

Hygrocybe mavis –

Hygrocybe austropratensis –

Hygrophorus involutus –

Hygrocybe lilaceolamellata –

Hygrocybe sp.

This golden yellow – orange species dos not seem to fit in with any in the field guides.

Another strange one is this waxcap, with a red stipe and green cap. I have seen it before at Sassafras Gully and Wolli Creek. The colours match Hygrocybe aurantipes, but it is not that species. It is small like H anomala. Perhaps a variant of that? Hygrocybe sp. –

Thats a lot of species of waxcaps!

Now for some of the other fungi –

Rimbachia cf. bryophila –

Trichoglossum hirsutum –

Ramariopsis kunzei –

Pseudohydnum gelatinosum –

Tremellodendropsis pusio –

Ramariopsis crocea –

Ramariopsis pulchella –

Mycena sp. –

Camarophyllopsis sp. –

Plectania campylospora –

Antrodiella zonata –

Tremella mesenterica –

Slime Mould – Perhaps Trichia sp. –

Is this a fungus, slime mould or insect eggs or ?

This was an outstanding day!
