After the Mudlarks Bird Survey, I headed home and after an early lunch I decided to look for some more local birds, so I caught some buses down to Barton Park. From there I planned to walk home via the Cooks River.
This worked out well, but not that many birds were out. At Barton Park, I first visited Landing Lights Wetland. Here are some of the birds there –
Pied Stilts
Chestnut Teals
And some birds around the hinterland.
Yellow Thornbill –
Red-browed Finch –
White-browed Scrubwren –
I then made my way to the Cooks River. I slowly walked upstream towards Kogarah Golf Course.
Pelican –
On the far side of the river, near the golf course, I spotted the Osprey.
I waited a fair while to see if it would fly my way. It didn’t. It did take off but flew into the airport. I later spotted it again –
At Cahill Park, I photographed this Australian White Ibis –
And near the Princes Highway bridge, another Pelican –
On Fatima Island were some Cormorants and a Darter –
I then walked up through Gough Whitlam Park. I was looking for the Tawny Frogmouth nest. I spotted it and it had been abandoned. I don’t think there would have been time since my last visit for a chick to hatch and fledge.
A local birder, mark, had told me about a Striated Heron nest upstream. I found it easily enough –
And nearby some Galahs were eating grass seeds –
A “Spoonville” had been set up during the lockdown. It looks like it has suffered a recent fire.
Here is a Little Pied Cormorant –
At the H J Mahoney Memorial Park I watched this Willie Wagtail hunting for insects –
And then I heard the alarm calls from a lot of birds. A raptor alert? Yes – I soon spotted a juvenile Peregrine Falcon –
