Birds at Barton Park – 6 September 2022

This was another productive day spent at Barton Park photographing the resident birds. I arrived a little after 9 am and stayed till around 3 pm.

During my visit, I was able to photograph a good range of birds.

When I arrived, as usual, I went to the Landing Lights Wetland. It was very quiet in the pond, I could see no birds in the water, and a single Egret foraging on the far bank. But closer, in the scrub were a pair of Double-barred Finches. Here is one –

Nearby was a male Superb fairy-wren

I then moved on to the old sporting fields. There I photographed some Yellow-rumped Thornbills.

And another Superb Fairy-wren.

I then went to the ned of the Spring St Canal, and photographed a Great Egret.

And a Royal Spoonbill was also feeding.

The Striated Heron was around, but hiding in the mangroves. I saw it when it flew off.

I then headed up to the higher area near the old stadium, but not many birds were around.  But a bit later I spotted a juvenile Black-shouldered Kite perched on one of the lights.

It took off and then flew around a bit.

Then a second Black-shouldered Kite arrived.

It was hard to watch both of them, as the flew off in different directions. I did not see either of them again during y visit.

In the grass were a large flock of Red-browed Finches.

And here is a Black-faced Cuckoo-shrike

And there was a he flock of Starlings

Back in the Spring St Canal, there was a Little Black Cormorant

And there were quite a few honeyeaters in the Lantana. Here is a New Holland Honeyeater

And a pair of Brown Honeyeaters

They were being chased off by a White-plumed Honeyeater.

And another New Holland Honeyeater.

Then the Brown Honeyeaters came back.

Here is another Superb Fairy-wren

I had been hearing Australian Reed Warblers in the wetland areas near the cycleway, but now one emerged from the reeds and perched closer to call out loudly marking its territory.

And another Red-browed Finch.

Back at the Landing Lights Wetland, some teals had now arrived. Here is a Grey Teal

And some Chestnut Teals

A White-faced Heron arrived.

And a few last shots of more Red-browed Finches
