I joined the group on the early morning bird survey along the Greenway – Hawthorne Canal – between Taverners Hill and Hawthorne Light Rail Stations.
This survey was relatively quiet in terms of birds seen. Here are some –
Red Wattlebird
Channel-billed Cuckoo
Along their canal, we spotted two nests we had seen on the previous survey. Both nests now had chicks. Here is a Magpie Lark nest – and the single chick looks quite advanced.
Often it seems, that Willie Wagtails locate their nests close to Magpie Lark nests. Perhaps for mutual security?
A Willie Wagtail lands close to their nest with some food.
Four chicks are squashed into the nest.
The chicks are very vulnerable to predators, and they sit back into the nest.
But, if they think a parent is near, they respond.
And the Magpie Lark nestling was still on the lookout for a food delivery –
Note that all the nest photos were taken from a long distance away from the nests using a long telephoto lens.
Further along the canal – a White-faced Heron –
Laughing Kookaburra
This young Pacific Koel was after food from its foster parents –
Here is a juvenile Masked Lapwing –
Then, as we crossed the footbridge over the canal, we were surprised to see a Brush-tailed Possum running across the grass. It was being pursued by a group of Noisy Miners.
It climbed up a tree in the dog area –
Magpie
Rainbow Lorikeet
Heading into the dog area, we located the possum again –
