Cooks River Birds – 23 June 2026

With unsettled weather, I have had to settle for short local trips between rain showers. I made it to the Cooks River for an afternoon wander with my camera. I met up with Sue and we had a pleasant time spotting birds.

Its always nice to look out for a spot the local Sacred Kingfishers. As I walked down the river from Illawarra Road, I saw two perched on a branch –

One, has a mud crab. I flew off with it. I watched the other for a while.

Downstream, was this Great Egret

And near Gough Whitlam Park, there are often Cormorants perched in the tres along the river.

Little Pied Cormorants

And the Tawny Frogmouths at Gough Whitlam Park –

We saw some parrots flying away, but a pair of Galahs remained, feeding on grass seeds.

Walking back upstream, we spotted another Sacred Kingfisher
