Geometric Rocks and Yileen Spur – 2 July 2026

Bob and myself were keen on a walk out along the Yileen Spur that lies south off Bells Line of Road. In addition, we could also visit the Geometric Rocks. Nipper and Airdrie joined us. The weather was fine, but very cold and windy.

Geometric Rocks

Geometric Rocks is a natural rock formation a short way south of Bells Line of Road and about half a kilometre west of the Pierces Pass turnoff. It is reached by a short side road to what appears to be an asbestos tip, then a track takes you to the Rocks about 200 m away.

Geometric Rocks is a very interesting place and well worth a visit. The rocks themselves are formed by three dimensional Liesegang Rings.

In the distance is the Grose Valley.

As well, there are a number of Aboriginal engravings. Here is an emu footprint –

And there are other engravings nearby –

Yileen Spur

We then drove a few more kilometres to the west and parked at the Mount Wilson turnoff. The first part of Yileen Spur is along an old fire road which soon becomes the Yileen anyone track.

The wattle was flowering –

At one place, we left the track and visited a rock outcrop covered with Aboriginal sharpening grooves.

Along the way are some fine views.

Dalpura Head

We left the track and continued cross-country along the spur. The walking is mixed with some short scrubby sections and some open moors.

It was pleasant walking, with often good views of the Grose Valley.

At the end of the spur are the cliffs of the Grose Valley.  We could look down to the end of Yileen Canyon –

And here is a panorama –

Here we are looking across to Brownes Path (Pass near Bennet Lookout) –

And also Lews Pass on the right side (true left) of the waterfall in Hat Hill Creek

Burramoko Head and Hanging Rock

Bennet Gully Falls

Despite the cold wind, it had been a very pleasant walk.
