I headed out to Malabar Headland with Sue, and we were later joined by Alana. I think we probably had the best session observing the family of Peregrine Falcons of the season.
Here are how things panned out –
When we arrived, we soon spotted the single juvenile Peregrine Falcon in the air, and it had a cicada. There were a lot of cicadas about on that day.
It landed on the cliffs to eat the cicada.
And it then took off.
And it landed a bit further along.
The juvenile soon returned, and it had another cicada.
Next, it tried to catch another –
But, it was not a cicada. It was a wasp!
It soon let the wasp go.
Then some more nice flying –
And another cicada –
A bit later, it tried to catch another –
The cicada escaped.
But the Falcon soon got another –
It was time for a rest.
Then one of the parents arrived, a high speed –
The juvenile took off after the parent.
And the second parent arrived –
And now some nice flying –
A parent has a cicada –
It is perhaps given to the juvenile –
Some more amazing aerobatics –
An old aeroplane flies past –
An adult Peregrine Falcon does some nice flying –
The juvenile now needs to have a rest –
It is time for us to head back to the bus stop at Maroubra Beach. On the walk out, we spotted a pair of Ospreys –
This had been a remarkable day!
