On a previous visit to the Gardens of Stone, I had been out on one of the western ridges of the Lost City with friend Roger. We had noticed then what looked like an unusual pillar of rock amongst the pagodas. I had worked out roughly where it was and was keen to get closer to it for a better look.

The chance for a walk to it arrived when Bob’s unavailable for the usual Thursday walk, but Doug was keen to head out and had not been to the Lost City before. And Doug was happy to drive up. So we headed up to the Newnes Plateau and venture out along some rough roads on the western side of the Lost City in the Gardens Of Stone Conservation Area. When the road got a bit too rough, we parked and then started walking.
Pomaderris andromedifolia

Woodland

We left the road, and then headed off track down a ridge into a world of pagodas.

One pagoda had a huge hole in it –

Then we spotted the pillar.

We walked over towards it, and the closer we got, the less impressive it was. It was not as large as it had looked from afar.

In appears to be a large boulder that has rolled down and stopped in an unusual angle. It does look quite hard to climb.

Grevillea acanthifolia

We then traversed along the side of a major ridge towards a set of pagodas that looked very good.

Looking back at the pillar –

Pagoda Daisies

Pultenaea scabra

It was nice country to scramble through. And there were fantastic views.

Comesperma sp.

We climbed back up to another road, an walked out along it to another vantage point. This was still on the west side of the Lost City.

More great views of pagodas –

Boronia sp.

Native Currant

And almost back at Doug’s car.
