Looking for Aboriginal Art in Maroota Ridge State Conservation Area – 22 October 2026

A wet day was forecast, so a short set of walks in Maroota State Conservation Area, near the Hawkesbury River, to look for some Aboriginal art caves  seemed like a good plan. I was with Bob, Doug and Nipper.

On the way to the start, we passed this Tardis. It was in the front of a property on Cattai Creek Road.

We talked to the owner. Let’s call him “The Doctor”. He said he had built it as a Covid Lockdown project. We did not look inside – so i don’t know if it was bigger on the inside than the outside.

We then reached our start point and walked into the conservation area.

Site #1

This cave featured some faint hand stencils done in red ochre.

Or a wider view –

Site #2

This was a small cave that had some charcoal art.

The right hand motif looks like a kangaroo of wallaby.

Site #3

We were at the right cave, but could not see any art in it. It may have faded away too much or exfoliated.

As it was raining, we found a larger overhang for lunch out of the rain. Nipper spotted this Echidna. It was in a bull ant nest.

Rock Orchid.

I think we had made the most of a rather damp day.
