The Grand Canyon – 15 December 2012

It was the weekend of the SUBW Xmas walk to the Coxs River. Often, some of the party heading down to the river, visit a local Blue Mountains canyon on Saturday morning to fill out the weekend. This years trip was organised by Ashley and he took a party through the Grand Canyon at Blackheath.

I was heading up with John, Chuin Nee and their 6 month old baby – Jasper. They wanted to take him through the canyon – but considered it a bit risky to take him down the abseil – so instead we headed up the canyon from below.

There is a long swim at the bottom of the canyon (the only swim in the canyon), this was dealt with by floating Jasper over on a lilo. We then headed up through the great canyon section just upstream.

This was easy walking – wading through pools under the towering walls of the canyon. The Grand Canyon is the longest and most spectacular canyon of those on the south side of the Grose Valley. The other contender for being spectacular would be Mt Hay Canyon – which is certainly the most exciting canyon, south of the Grose, but it is relatively short.

Chuin Nee and myself carried up cameras and tried to photograph the canyon. Besides the photos here, I have a larger set on display on my website here.

While we were heading up, we met the SUBW party coming down the canyon. They seemed to be having a good time. For some of the party – it was their first canyon.

Further upstream we met a small commercial party coming down the canyon. I followed them down – with my camera. The photographs show the value of having people wearing dull wetsuits but with bright helmets and bright packs as subject in your photographs.

After the canyon – we walked up the track to Evans Lookout. Then it was back in the car to head down to Megalong Valley for the Coxs River.
