Birds at Sydney Olympic Park – 12 February 2020

After visiting the Greenway, I was undecided where to head to for the rest of the day. Storms seemed to be approaching, so I made my way to Central on the light rail and on the way consulted the weather radar. I ended up deciding on a visit to Sydney Olympic Park.

I first visit the ponds at Bicentennial Park. Not that many birds were around. Here are some –

Superb Fairy-wren

Great Egret

Little Pied Cormorant

White-faced Heron

Pied Stilts

Chestnut Teal

Silvereye

Red-necked Avocet

I next made my way into Wentworth Common and to the Brickpit. Far below the high level walking path I spotted an Australasian Grebe with some chicks.

I thought the Grebe was either brave of silly. Nearby was perched a Black-shouldered Kite

I watched the Kite for about 30 minutes, but it did not take-off. So I made my way back to Wentworth Common. In this small area, on Previous visits I have seen Nankeen Kestrels, Brown Quails and a Buff-banded Rail. This time, while I was watching a Moorhen with its chicks, I spotted the Buff-banded Rail.

And the Dusky Moorhen with its chicks –

I then headed back to Bicentennial Park. At the wrecks, there was an Australian Darter

Back in the ponds, I photographed a Royal Spoonbill

And I was surprised to see a Hare on the path –

It was starting to look stormy again. So I decided to head back to Concord West Station. I next made a visit to Sydney Park at St Peters.
