I spent a pleasant day out with Valerie and Sue at the Nepean River at Camden and later at Mt Annan Botanic Gardens. We had gone to observe birds.
We found a good variety of birds along the bike path next to the Nepean River at Camden. The highlight was seeing a Grey Goshawk chick in its nest. The nest was on the far side of the river, well away from people. Here is the chick after being fed by a parent –
The parent then flies off.
Here are some of the other birds at Camden –
Red-browed Finch
Grey Shrike-thrush
Common Blackbird
Sulphur-crested Cockatoos
This one is thirsty –
Dollar Birds
A Rufous Whistler
One of several Sacred Kingfishers we could hear calling –
A Lewin’s Honeyeater
Valerie spotted this nice Tawny Frogmouth –
Its partner was sitting on a nest nearby –
A King Parrot –
A pair of Red-rumped Parrots at their nest hole –
We then visited the Botanic Gardens at Mt Annan. We stopped first Lake Nadungamba. On our circumnavigation of the lake we saw a lot of birds. First a Reed Warbler –
And a pair of delightful Scarlet Honeyeaters. They were enjoying the nectar of the mistletoe growing on some Casuarinas.
There was also a Mistletoebird –
And on a nearby dead tree, a juvenile Black-shouldered Kite was perched –
A Pied Cormorant was perched on the island –
After lunch, we visited the Banksia Gardens and observed a few Satin Bowerbirds –
We later walked along the path to the Stolen Generations Memorial. It was a shame to see the centrepiece, a sculpture by Badger Bates, was covered up after being vandalised.
We did another circuit of Lake Nadungamba and I have included some of the photos with those above. But we also saw group of White-winged Choughs. Here is one –
This had been a great day out. Thanks to Valerie for driving and to the her and Sue for great company on the day. Also thanks to Janardan for some tips on where to see the Goshawk nest.
Great range of birds there, Dave. The Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos are of course Sulphur-crested Cockatoos.
Oops – now corrected! Thanks.
Hi David,
I have regularly seen a large bird of prey flying in close circles descending to very low over the houses here in Camden park nsw. To me it looks like the red goshawk. But google says this bird is very rare. Could you assist in identifying. I haven’t been able to take a photo. Cheers
It could be a Brown Falcon, or perhaps a Brown Goshawk. They are not that large though. You could look online on eBird and see what raptors have been observed nearby.
