Cooks River and Barton Park Birds – 24 July 2021

Day 28 of lockdown. Another exercise bike ride. This time I did make it to Barton Park, but the afternoon was relatively quiet for birds. Perhaps because it was quite a windy day.

I cycled down the Cooks River Cycleway, but didn’t see any birds until I got to Cahill Park. This was where I had seen a Sacred Kingfisher the day before. I was here again.

But it didn’t stay long. It flew into some small mangroves, and perched out of sight. I didn’t see it again. So I turned my camera to some there birds nearby.

Here is a Royal Spoonbill

And an Australian Darter  was swimming, but climbed out onto the mudbank.

In the creek (stormwater drain), a Great Egret was hunting for fish –

It soon caught small one –

This time it caught two –

But one escaped.

I continued on my ride and soon reached Barton Park. The Landing Lights Wetland was relatively quiet. Here is a White-faced Heron

And one of the Pied Stilts. This one feeding in the hinterland.

Back to the Heron –

Looking around for other birds, I spotted this New Holland Honeyeater

The top area was also very quiet. A few Welcome Swallows and Fairy Martins were flying about hunting for insects. Here is a Fairy Martin

And this Welcome Swallow is just about to grab an insect –

And so is this Fairy Martin

And a Pelican flew overhead.

The ride home was pretty uneventful.
