Visit to Oatley Park – 26 September 2023

I spent an enjoyable morning wandering around Oatley Park. I wanted to see what orchids were about – and I did find a few, but not as many as I was hoping. But I also found a few birds to photograph.

I walked to the park from Oatley Station and entered via the entrance near the primary school. I then set off down a track heading towards Frog Hollow.

I had seen orchids along here previously, but this all I found were some buds. But a lot of birds seemed to be claiming hollows.

Rainbow Lorikeets

Sulphur-crested Cockatoo

Rainbow Lorikeets

Grevillea sp.

Crimson Rosellas

Wasp Moth

One at Frog Hollow, I then walked up the road to the Lime Kiln Bay Wetlands. Along the way I saw some movement overhead and spotted a Collared Sparrowhawk perched in a tree.

I watched it for a while, hoping to get some flight shots.

Here its calling out. Perhaps to its mate?

The wetlands were relatively quiet, until I encountered some squabbling Red Wattlebirds.

One had found some good nectar, but another one chased it away.

And a little bit upstream. there are usually Water Dragons.

On the track on the western side of Lime Kiln Bay. I spotted single Caladenia sp. orchid.

Then I crossed over the footbridge, back into Oatley Park and walked up the closed road. Then turned off and walked along the foot track. Here I spotted a few Beard Orchids. Calochilus sp. –

The Flannel Flowers are coming out, and always seem to attract bugs.

And another Beard Orchid. Calochilus sp. –
