Greenway Bird Survey (And a Look at the Cooks River Tawny Frogmouths) – 25 November 2023

I took part in the early morning bird survey along the Dulwich Hill section of the Greenway. After the survey, I joined Valerie and Simin for a walk along part of the Cooks River to look at the Tawny Frogmouths.

The weather was not the best for the Greenway Bird Survey. There was light rain on and off. This made photography difficult – with poor light, and also many of birds preferred to stay in shelter.

Here are some of the birds we saw –

Australasian Figbirds

Grey Butcherbird

Australian White Ibis

Red Wattlebirds

Silvereye

Superb Fairy-wren

Australian White Ibis

New Holland Honeyeater

And, as usual, we finished with coffee and a chat at a local cafe.

Now, to the Cooks River. We first visited Ewen Park, and saw the Tawny Frogmouth nest vacated. It looked like the chick had fledged! So we looked in nearby trees, and soon spotted the young chick with its guardian parent.

It was great to see that the chick had fledged.

Then we continued along the river upstream. We spotted this Willie Wagtail sitting on a nest –

Then the second parent arrived. it was time for a changeover.

At the Boat Harbour there was one Pelican

And we soon spotted the Tawny Frogmouth family –

Here are some other angles –

And walking back to Ewen Park, some more birds –

Masked Lapwing

A number of Silver Gulls were flying up the river, and then landing, and seeming to grab something from the water, then leave.

We also saw an Eastern Rosella

And a Superb Fairy-wren –

And a last bird – a Crested Pigeon

This was a good way to start the day, the rest of which was a bit wetter.
