Wolli Creek Nature Walk – 13 October 2020

It had been a while since I had walked down the Two Valleys Track along Wolli Creek. I had recently heard some reports of Scarlet Honeyeaters and Variegated Fairy-wrens being seen at two spots along the creek, so that provided a good excuse to make this afternoon visit.

Mudlarks – Cooks River Bird Survey – 13 October 2020

I spent an interesting and enjoyable morning with the Mudlarks – the Cooks River Bird Group. This month we surveyed the birds downstream of the Lang Street Bridge, as far as the footbridge to the Golf Course, then headed back upstream on the northern side.

Back to Emu Green – 12 October 2020

I decided to head back to Emu Green for some more bird photography. This visit, my main aim was to try and photograph some Emu-wrens. In this, I failed – not even seeing any. But there were plenty of other nice birds there.

On the walk to Emu Green from Emu Plains station, I didn’t see any birds at the Whistling Kite nest. But on arriving at  the barrier to the lane, I spotted a Nankeen Kestrel flying quite high overhead. Continue reading →

Malabar Headland – 11 October 2020

Another visit to the headland to check the status of the Peregrine Falcons. Both the male and female falcons were visible at the nest area, but no sign of any chicks so far. However, after a slow start, the Peregrine Falcons were quite active and I was able to photograph a number of their take-offs.

Local Birds – Tempe, Barton Park and Cooks River – 10 October 2020

It was the day for the Tempe Birdos to have their monthly survey. I joined them and helped survey the wetlands. After the group finished with morning tea, I cycled to Barton Park and had a look at the Landing Lights Wetland and the hinterland. I finished by riding home along the Cooks River and checking a few spots.

Heathcote National Park Walk – 8 October 2020

In recent times, the wildflowers have been outstanding in Royal National Park. I was keen to see how good they would be in the neighbouring Heathcote National Park. Bob had never been walking in the park, so I suggested a walk from Waterfall to Heathcote. This would allow us to visit some nice places along the way.

We left Waterfall and soon found ourselves on the Bullawarring Track. This descends through beautiful forest to the creek and then along the creek to the Kingfisher Pool. Along the way, we spotted some nice orchids and other wildflowers. Continue reading →

Oatley Park Visit – 7 October 2020

It had been a while since I had visited Oatley Park. I thought it would be nice to see what birds and wildflowers were out. My is it was cut short a bit by showers, but I did find some nice birds and a lot of orchids.

I walked to Lime Kiln Bay from Mortdale Station, and then walked around the wetlands and along the track to the west side of the bay. Then I went to Frog Hollow, and up the track towards the Adventure Playground. Part way up, I took the side track that headed north, and followed it through a nice grove  of trees. After having lunch, I continued up to the top park entrance, and down the track to Jewfish Bay. Then it started raining, so I continued on to Websters Lookout and back down the road to Lime Kiln Bay, along to he wetlands again and back to Mortdale Station. Continue reading →
