I spent a nice day at the zoo, wandering around taking photos.
This time I started out at the Seal Show, which I had not been to for a number of years. It was very good.
The highlights of this visit were seeing the baby meerkats and a very young lengur. It was quite a hot day and the older lengurs were asleep, but the baby was a bundle of energy – constantly swinging around on the branches. A good photographic subject.
The meerkats are used to heat and parents and two babies were quite active.
Inside the huge rainforest aviary, I only spotted a few resting birds. All the others seemed to be hiding away in cool spots.
In the reptile section, many of the snakes and lizards seem to be constantly asleep. This visit a taipan was wide awake and prowling around – a very good photographic subject.
It was also interesting watching some turtles being fed small fish. The fascinating part was the turtles were sharing their pond with a couple of fresh water crocodiles. The crocodiles seemed to be scoring a fair bit of the fish. The keeper said she always takes this into account.
The best time to see the koalas is at feeding time at 3:30 pm. The keeper talk is on then, and she starts by bringing in some fresh leaves. The koalas seemed to awaken from their usual torpor and rush to the fresh leaves. Sometimes even making quite large leaps.
More photos from this visit are online on my website here.
