Brown Goshawks at Rookwood – 25 January 2025

In the morning, I had been on the local bird survey along The Greenway. I then went home for an early lunch, and then visited Rookwood Necropolis. On my last visit, I had photographed a newly fledged Brown Goshawk chick. I was hoping it would still be around.

On the walk into the Necropolis, I spotted a pair of Eastern Rosellas. Here is one –

Walking towards the area I had seen the Brown Goshawk chick on the last visit, I could hear its call. I soon spotted the juvenile bird –

It was calling loudly. Probably to let its parents know where it was and that it wanted food delivery.

It flew to another branch –

And then moved again –

But now I could hear some more calling, and it was not from the one I had been watching. There was a second chick!

They kept moving from perch to perch in the woodland. It was easy to loose one or both of them. But they would soon start calling again.

Each time they moved, it would take a bit of time to find one or both of them again. And flight shots amongst all the branches were particularly difficult.

It was disappointing to see a dump of building rubbish on the hallowed grounds of Rookwood.

Back to the Brown Goshawks. Two final photos –

And on the walk out to Lidcombe Station, I heard the calls of Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos. They were coming my way –

This had been a very rewarding afternoon.
