Rookwood Necropolis – A Juvenile Brown Goshawk – 4 January 2025

Last summer, I had made a number of visits to Rookwood Necropolis to photograph three just fledged Brown Goshawks. I had made three earlier visits this season to Rookwood – in August, September and October of 2024, and seen some signs that the Brown Goshawks were nesting. But the birds were not in their old nest tree. It seems this summer, they have had one chick.

Arriving at Rookwood, I set off to the Serpentine Creek area, and soon spotted the juvenile Brown Goshawk.

It moved around a fair bit in the trees.

It was very hard to get flight shots.

It was calling a lot, probably for food.

I never good views of the parents while I was there. But there was certainly a second one there. I got a few glimpses of it flying, but could not determine if it was a parent or second juvenile. It was probably a parent.

Back to the juvenile –

Four Channel-billed Cuckoos flew over high up –

This is the only flight shot I got, and it is very poor –

It was nice to observe this young bird.
