Kincumber Mountain and Winney Bay Coast Walk – 27 February 2025

Bob had suggested coastal walk, on the rock platforms under the cliffs between Winney Bay and Avoca Beach on the Central Coast near Terrigal. We thought the walk would be easier in low tide, and as that was in the afternoon, we first visited Kincumber Mountain.

Bob drove up the road to Kincumber Mountain and parked at picnic area on the top. Then we set out to visit the Colin Watters Lookout, reached via the Yanina Walk (a fire road).

The lookout was a bit over a kilometre along the fire road, and it was easy pleasant walking through a nice forest.

The lookout had filtered views of the valley below –

We then started walking back.

Part way along, we turned off down the Kanning Track, a walking trail.

The track led to a number of cultural sites – both Aboriginal and European. Below cliff is a large cave, that would have been an Aboriginal occupation cave. But it was also used as shelter during the great depression.

Near the cave we found some cut out steps leading to the top of a rock shelf.

There was small water supply dam –

On the top, we found a couple of Aboriginal  wells –

And a few old European engravings –

Coming back down the steps, we found some Aboriginal sharpening grooves –

The cave was quiet large, and contains a lot of graffiti –

The hand prints are not stencils and seem to be very recent.

We then walked back to Bob’s car and he drove to the south end of Avoca Beach. After having lunch in a nearby picnic area, we set off up a public walkway up the steep hill to the south.

At the top, we walked past a water tower and then followed a road down to Winney Bay

At Winney Bay, we then started walking north along the rock platform.

It was very easy walking –

Further along, there was one slight tricky bit where there is a dyke that needs to be crossed.

A lot of kids were swimming here. It seems school holidays start early here!

Fortunately, there is a convenient rock ledge leading to the other side of the dyke.

We also visited the large sea cave –

And there are some old cut out steps leading to the ledge –

Once past this boy, we resumed the very easy walking all the way to Avoca Beach.

Before leaving the area, we went to Winney Bay Lookout at Cocacabana

And nearby is Captain Cook Lookout. The rock platforms south of Winney Bay look like they can be traversed, but to for very far –

The lookout has great views of the ocean, but that’s about it.
