Last year, on one of my walks down the Lane Cove River, I had walked out to Chatswood via Blue Gum Creek. On that trip, I had followed a rough old track all the way up the creek to the Chatswood Scout Hall and then along a good track to Dulwich Road. On the way up the creek I had found a fair bit of fungi out – including some nice waxcaps. That trip was late in last years fungi season, so I was keen to return to see what was out this year.
This year, the fungi season has not been nearly as good as last year – probably due to less rainfall. But I did spot some nice fungi along the banks of Blue Gum Creek –
When I arrived at the Lane Cove River, I continued downstream along the river and stopped for lunch. I then walked around a golf coarse to Ferndale Park. Both of these are near Swains Creek. I had not visited Ferndale Park before but after seeing some pictures of waxcaps posted on the Sydney Fungi Facebook page taken in the park – I thought it worth having a look. It was.
To get there, at first I had to walk a short way along a road to an oval, then I followed a track around the gold coarse to Ferndale Park. A short way up, the track splits in two – with tracks going up each branch of the creek. I followed up one branch, then back down it, and then up the other branch to exit.
As well as fungi, I also spotted quite a few orchids out. To see pictures of them and more of the fungi – go to this page on my website.
