Another day spent on Long Reef. Actually, I had visited Long Reef two days earlier, but had been greeted by a thick sea fog. I had waited to see if it cleared, but it didn’t, so I headed home early. This visit was a lot more fruitful. As well as photographing the Ospreys, I also photographed a rare visitor to Sydney – a Beach Stone-curlew.
Here are how things panned out.
When I arrived, around 10:30 am. I didn’t see any flying birds from the lookout. Descending down the steps, with binoculars, I spotted an Osprey perched on one of the trees on the northside of the headland. I walked over towards it.
When I got close, another Osprey, with a fish, flew past and headed north.
I watched the perched Osprey. It suddenly spotted something.
Another Osprey had flew past and landed nearby. It had just caught a fish. It was not the Osprey I had seen earlier as this was a different fish.
Here is the Osprey with the fish –
Back to the first Osprey.
A few more bird photographers had arrived, including Celine, who I had met a few times before. She headed back towards the point, and then I noticed she had stopped and seemed to be photographing the sand. She signalled for me to come over, and as I got close I saw she had been photographing a Beach-Stone-curlew. Nice!
It then took off and flew along the back towards where the Ospreys were perched.
I walked back to get some more shots.
People. walking alone the beach spooked it, and it took off –
I then went back to see how the Ospreys were going.
This one still had a bit of fish left.
And the perched one was much the same.
Then another Osprey flew past –
One of the perched ones now took off.
They flew out to sea.
Back at the point. A Pied Oystercatcher was chasing another bird –
It was chasing the Beach Stone-curlew.
Caspian Tern
The Beach Stone-curlew came back and flew out to the Island.
Caspian Terns
There were now a few more bird photographers present, as well as Celine, there was Jeremy, Jimmy and some others.
One of the Ospreys circled around –
We later spotted it, out to sea, with a fish.
