Northern Beaches Peregrine Falcons – 26 October 2025

After recent great trips to see the new family of Peregrine Falcons on the sea cliffs of the Northern Beaches, I was keen for another trip to the cliffs. It amazing to watch these very young birds develop their flying skills. Sue came along with me.

The morning was nice, but after lunch we had a few periods of light rain. We could shelter in a cave near the cliffs. The baby Peregrine Falcons were simply amazing. We saw a really great display of flying.

When we arrived we spotted a juvenile Peregrine Falcon perched on the cliffs –

And then it did some flying –

We later spotted two juveniles perched on the cliffs further along –

One went for a flight.

But when it tried to land, it encountered a problem.

One of its siblings was attempting to land in the same spot.

Then the mother arrived. She swooped close to me, so I know it was time to leaver that area.

Then the mother and one of the chicks did some nice flying together. The parent is teaching flying skills.

Then the juvenile landed for a rest.

A bit latter, two juveniles were flying together. Interacting midair –

The adult female was now resting –

The juveniles kept up their flying –

The two juveniles would often rest on the cliffs for a while, and we had to wait for the air show to start again. They fly for perhaps 10 minutes each hour. So you need to be prepared to wait for them to take to the air.

There are three juveniles in the family. But with Peregrine Falcons, I have observed when there are three chicks, two of them often seem to team up, while the third is an outsider. We did see  three chicks in the air at the one time, but not for very long.

And I was not able to get all three chicks interacting like these –

The mother arrives again –

Back to the juveniles –

The mother cruising past.

This chick had been resting –

While this was trying to catch some Cabbage White moths –

Time for a rest –

Their mother on guard duty –

Some more flying from the chicks –

The wind was picking up and more rain was coming, so we left in the early afternoon. I think this has been my best session of Peregrine Falcon photography on these cliffs this season.

    Hello David.,,
Well you certainly had a time in the Northern beaches .As usual great photography.

I presume this as at Dee Why. But I can’t tell from the shots as I don’t know the area well enough
How long do you think they will be in this lovely learning stage.
I thought I might come up at the week end if the weather looks reasonable
Regards and great stuff as usual
    Ian.
