Return to Balls Head – 11 August 2026

A few weeks earlier, I had been in a group to visit Balls Head at Waverton. Our focus had been looking at Aboriginal art sites. On that trip we had visited a number of sites but wanted to have a more thorough look at some of the sites and to look at a remarkable sea cave that has some art. The party was Bob, Doug, Nipper and myself.

To get to the sea cave requires a low tide, and we had planned our visit on an afternoon with a low tide.

We noticed several gouged out holes to collect water –

The Aboriginal art is quite hard to find and is in charcoal –

The hard is pretty hard to interpret, but is thought to be human figures, fish and other objects.

Another panel nearby also seems to have some charcoal art –

Old survey mark –

We then climbed back up and made our way to the lookouts –

We next visited an ochre art cave that we had visited on the earlier trip. This one features hand stencils and fish. They are hard to see without histogram stretching software –

And we next visited  another cave we had seen earlier. This time we were looking for more hand stencils. One is clear and another not too bad, but more are difficult to see.

The obvious stencil is on the left, but there is another on the right. But is there also one on the left?

And are their more hand stencils here? –

And on the previous trip, we had located an engraving of a fish. We visited that rock outcrop again, and spotted s second fish engraving nearby.

Here you can see both fish engravings –

It’s good to see and appreciate this Aboriginal art that is still in place so close to Sydney.
