Royal National Park – Wattamolla, Maianbar and Audley – 26 September 2018

I spent a pleasant day in Royal National Park with Digi Dave. I had told him about the dead whale washed up at Wattamolla and we interested to see if any sharks were feeding on it. They had been a few days before.

However, when we arrived at Wattamolla, we heard that the whale carcass had been towed out to sea early that morning. Nevertheless, we walked out to Providential Point for some photography.

On the way, we photographed some of the Water Dragons at the creek near the carpark and also some of the birds there.

Out at Providential Point there were nice views. A few birds few past – but no Sea Eagles. Returning to the carpark, I spotted a very distant Sea Eagle being harassed by a Raven.

We then had a look at the temporary pontoon which provides access to the beach while the track is being fixed up.

It was starting to rain, so we left the area. Digi Dave suggested that a visit to Maiainbar may be worthwhile, so we headed down to a small park at the  waterfront. This led to the large sand bar.

The tide was low, so we walked out onto the bar. In the far distance we could see some Eastern Curlews – migratory birds that rely on the bar for food and shelter after a big migratory journey.

We also saw a number of Crested Terns. One was in the process of swallowing a crab.

We then returned to Digi Dave’s car and drove down to the end of the street and set off on foot down the track towards Bundeena.

The short track goes down to a bridge over  the outlet of a lagoon. On the way there are attractive Angophoras and we spotted a few Caladenia Orchids. In the trees above we saw a noisy Channel-billed Cuckoo.

Our last destination for the day was a short stop at Audley. Not too many birds out.
