A very hot day was forecast, so it seemed a good time to visit some canyons. I travelled up the mountains with Bob and Doug. After coffee stop at Lawson, we decided to do Jugglers Canyon and then the Grand Canyon.
We drove out to the airfield at Medlow Bath and there Bob parked the car. We packed our gear for the canyons and took a 40 m rope. It was short walk down to Jugglers Canyon. We used the rope for a hand-over-hand and soon found ourselves at the first abseil.
This takes you down to a beautiful deep pool. It is easy to avoid getting wet at the bottom by scrambling around on ledges on either the right or left.
This abseil also takes you into the throat of the canyon.
A careful traverse on a narrow parapet on the left takes you to the next belay point. Another short abseil –
Then a scramble down a fixed rope.
From here, it is possible to abseil down of the ledges to the right or left, but it is easier (and only needs a short rope) to keep going down the creek – scrambling down a short drop to the final abseil.
At the bottom. we descended to Greaves Creek, crossed it and joined the track that heads up to the Grand Canyon. We then walked up the track to the start of the canyon section. A short abseil brought us into the canyon –
We then continued down the very pleasant canyon. The lighting was not that good for photography. I had been carrying a tripod – but the lighting was too harsh to justify setting it up.
We passed another party on the way.
The final swim in the canyon was quite cold. We then walked down to the main tourist track where we stopped for lunch.
It was a hot walk back up the old Pilcher Track back to Bob’s car. As we climbed, there was an abundance of flowering Boronia – quite amazing to see.
