This was another pleasant day spent in Malabar Headland National Park. I caught a bus to Maroubra Beach and then walked out to the National Park.
On the way, I spotted quite a few Superb Fairy-wrens and lizards.
Out on Magic Point, I was surprised to find a couple of slackliners. There was not too much to see however – they seemed to be starting to pack up their gear.
Further out, I spotted a Peregrine Falcon. It was sitting on a perch and seemed quite content to stay there for a while. I sat down to watch it, and then had lunch, keeping my eyes on it. It made no sign of wanting to move. Eventually, after about ninety minutes of watching, it did take off – and I did have my camera ready and recorded its take off with a sequence of photos.
But the Falcon was a long way off. The bird then flew around a bit and after a while settled on another perch.
This one was easier to get closer to, but again the bird seemed to be quite settled. After my previous wait – I was not too happy to hang around again. I did wait about twenty minutes.
During my wait, I noticed another Peregrine Falcon fly past. It did not stay in the area however.
I then started back to Maroubra. More Fairy-wrens –
And some Welcome Swallows in the pollution settling pond.
Just before I got to the carpark near the surf club – I noticed a Nankeen Kestrel flying near. I watched it and moved closer to where it was hovering.
The Kestrel was hunting and dived a few times.
Suddenly it was joined by another Kestrel. It was hard to watch both of them. One landed on a post and seemed to have some prey. I walked closer to the post and grabbed a few photos of it.
Then a Willie Wagtail flew down and forced the much larger Kestrel to move out of the area. The Wagtail must be nesting.
