Middle Head Walk – 27 March 2019

This was a pleasant and interesting walk from Taronga Zoo around the harbour on the Coastal Track to Middle Head. It was led by Brian Everingham for the National Parks Association of NSW.

As well as Brian and myself, there were Gary S, Gail, Karen, Anne, Claire, Esther, Sue W, Paul, Sue B, Gary L and Terry. Most fo the party met at Circular Quay and then travelled to the zoo via Ferry.

Once out of the ferry, it is pleasant walking along a path through Angophoras to Bradleys Head. We could no help nothing a huge number of Golden Orb spiders.

Bradleys Head is the site of a naval memorial.

We then continued around to Chowder Head and Chowder Bay.

At Chowder Bay, we stopped for coffee. We also watched a Crested Tern diving for fish.

We the continued to Georges Head and then to Middle Head. More birds, nice trees and great views along the way.

I had been along the Coastal Path before between Balmoral and Taronga Zoo, but had not been out on Middle Harbour. It was once a naval base, and now much of it is open to the public. There are a number of old forts that are interesting to visit. They have incredible views of the harbour and North and South Heads.

We then walked down to Balmoral, where most of the party caught a bus back to Taronga Zoo, and a ferry back to the city. Thanks to Brian for organising the walk.
