Coastal Walking – Maroubra to La Perouse – 16 August 2019

Su Li had a few days off work, so was keen on a mid-week walk. I put forward a number of suggestions and we ended up deciding on a walk along to coast from Maroubra to La Perouse.

I have been many times recently to the first part of the walk – out on Malabar Healdand, but the last time I walked the whole coastline was on a trip from Bronte to La Perouse, and on that trip, Malabar Headland was not open. So this time, the walk started at Malabar Headland National Park and finishes at Kamay-Botany Bay National Park but in the middle there are three golf courses to negotiate.

Magic Point

We got off the bus at Maroubra Beach and then walked out onto Malabar Headland. I was on the lookout for whales and birds – but things were fairly quiet. Near Boora Point, we looked for Peregrine Falcons, but with no success.

We continued around Long Bay and then along the side of the first golf course to Little Bay. Randwick Council are supposed to be working on a constructed Coastal Track along this section, but so far there are no signs of any work.

On the way, we stopped on a clifftop and look for whales. We did see one a fair way out.

At Little Bay, the way was crystal clear. We dropped down to the beach and then followed a rock platform for a bit then back up onto the second golf course.

We followed this till we reached a fire road that led to an old cemetery.

Then just past a rescue helicopter base, we followed a road to the cliff tops for the next bit to Cape Banks. At Cape Banks, we walked out to the far end then found a nice sunny spot to stop for lunch. This also provides a good opportunity for some more whale watching. We dis spot some more whales – but agin, they were a long way out.

We then walked around the western side of the cape to the wreck of the Minima. Near this were some interesting rock platforms.

Then to the third golf course. There was a new separated pathway to follow here.

At Henry Head, we spotted a Nankeen Kestrel perched on a pole.

From there it was a short walk to La Perouse and then a bus back to the City. A very pleasant day out.
