Birds of the Lane Cove Valley – 27 August 2019

I had travelled up to Cheltenham to see a pair of newly fledged Powerful Owlets. I met my friend Bob, who lives close to where the Powerful Owls have their nest, and we walked the short distance into the bush of Byles Creek to see if we could locate the chicks. We were very fortunate we soon found both the Owlets and both parents. I will upload some photos in a separate blog post. After taking photos of the Owls, I left Bob and headed down the fire road along Devlins Creek to the Lane Cove River, I then walked down that and then up the track that follows Terrys Creek to Eastwood. This was an excellent trip for bird photography.

As I walked down Devlins Creek I could not help seeing and hearing a lot of very noisy Sulphur Crested Cockatoos.

The area near the junction with the Lane Cove River and a short way downstream was very fruitful. I could hear some Golden Whistlers and also some Whipbirds. I waited quietly and was able to get some reasonable shots. Here are some of one of the Golden Whistlers –

Here are some photos of a White-browed Scrubwren –

A little further downstream I was fortunate to see a Whipbird –

And also a Lewin’s Honeyeater –

I even found a few Greenhood Orchids out.

At Terrys Creek there were a lot of Bell Miners. Here is one –

And a few more birds –

Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo

Red-browed Finch

Further upstream I photographed a Brown Thornbill –

And a few more –

Yellow-faced Honeyeater

Golden Whistler

Laughing Kookaburra

Near the start of the creek I photographed a Grey Fantail diving for an insect.

Loved looking at your fabulous photos of Birds of the Lane Cove Valley 2019. They have helped us identify what we have seen on our walks from West Pymble to Turramurra and beyond.
    Thank you!

Your red browed scrub wren is a grass finch or red browed firetails.
