Cooks River and Barton Park Birds – 21 September 2019

Another pleasant day spent in my local area recording the birdlife.

I started by cycling down to the Cooks River and then riding along the cycleway to see what was about. On the mudflats I spotted this Great Egret –

Then I checked out some of the local Tawny Frogmouths –

And a Butcherbird was calling, with a Noisy Miner looking on –

On my way downstream I spotted a pair of Spoonbills. Here is one perched in a tree –

I then rode to Barton Park. As soon as I arrived and he Landing Lights Wetland, I spotted a juvenile Black-shouldered Kite perched on one of the lights of the sporting field above. I moved up to that area.

I then waited to see if the Kite would take off. It eventually did – but for a surprising reason.

It had noticed a Brown Goshawk nearby and had objected to its presence. The Kite flew down at it, and then flew off. So did the Brown Goshawk.

I then photographed some of the nearby smaller birds. Here is a Superb Fairywren –

I then spotted a large bird on the ground a fair way off. As I approached I saw it was the Kite. It had a skink.

It then took off with it –

That was the last I saw of the Kite. I made my way back to the Landing Lights Wetland.

Here are  some of the birds at the Wetland –

Red-browed Finch

Great Egret

White-faced Heron

Pied Stilt

Bulbul

And the Brown Goshawk flew past (very quickly) –

It had been a nice day.
