After spending the morning at Westleigh, I thought it would be nice to break my journey home by stopping off at Concord West and having a wander through Bicentennial Park.
It was smoky and fairy quiet at the main bird pond. There were lots of Pied Stilts and Red-necked Avocets around and some if the usual ducks. But I could see no migratory birds.
The water in the pond was deep because of a high tide. On two occasions all the Avocets and Stilts took off and flew around and hen landed. I have seen them do this if there is a predator such as an Eagle flying overhead. I could not see anything this time.
Here are some of the other birds –
White-faced Heron
Australian White Ibis
Superb Fairy-wrens
Great Egret
Welcome Swallows
It was in Wentworth Common that I spotted a more interesting bird – a Buff-banded Rail.
I then made my way to Lake Belvedere. Things were a lot busier here. One of the islands was full of Darters and Cormorants busy gathering nest material. But first I looked for Birds at the outlet creek. I only saw some Super Fairy-wrens.
I then crossed a bridge out to an island at Lake Belvedere. This gave a good view of the nesting island, and also the birds flying to and from it. Here are some Darters and Cormorants –
On the other side a Royal Spoonbill was having a bath –
And one last bit to clean –
And a few of the other birds –
Purple Swamphen
Dusky Moorhen chicks
I finally made a stop here on the way back from Glenbrook, purely based on the trips you’ve written about and it was awesome. Ticked off Red Necked Avocet which was a new one for us. Thanks very much for keeping up the blog. It’s very useful!
