I had not been to the Warriewood Wetlands for a while and thought it may be better than some of the closer wetlands that have dried up due to the drought. Well I found Warriewood Wetlands had largely dried up too. This was perhaps the reason that there were not too many birds around.
I started by walking down a section of Mullet Creek. I was on the lookout for Black Bitterns. No luck today. I did see a pair of Dollar Birds and a White-faced Heron.
Crossing the road back to the Wetland side, I spotted some Purple Swamphens with chicks.
I then went through the Wetlands along the main boardwalk. The only birds I saw or heard were Bell Miners. I continued on to Irrawong Reserve. Again – fairly quiet. Walking back things were a bit better. Here are some birds –
Eastern Yellow Robin
Olive-backed Orioles
Eastern Whipbird
I then walked to the Settling Ponds. They were full of water and there were water birds around. Here are some Australasian Grebes –
And a Willie Wagtail and its very full nest.
Some of the other ponds nearby were dry.
There were the usual Water Dragons around.
I then had lunch and walked down Mullet Creek, this time all the way to Narrabeen Lagoon. Again, no sign of any Bitterns. I did spot an Australasian Darter drying its wings.
And a Dollarbird.
At Lakeside Park near Narrabeen Lagoon, I spotted a Nankeen Kestrel perched high up on a light. I was able to get some shots of it flying and returning wth prey.
I then walked to Rat Park to see if the Ospreys were around. There nest looks abandoned. But I did spot another Nankeen Kestrel and got a few shots of it.
