Wattamolla to Eagle Rock Walk – 3 March 2020

Last week I visited Eagle Rock in Royal National Park on a walk with the National Parks Association of NSW led by Brian Everingham. That walk was via the Curra Moors. Now – I was on another of Brian’s walks – this one also to Eagle Rock, but with a different starting point – Wattamolla. This was quite a different walk – and there was no overlap – except for Eagle Rock itself.

The party was Brian, Faye, Sue B, Esther, Pam, Helen, Derek, Annette, Peter, Phillip, Julie and myself. As we  were walking up to the top of the first hill, I spotted distant Sea Eagle –

At the dyke, we spotted pair of Rock Warblers. Here is one of them –

And there was a good view looking south.

Early on the walk, we witnessed an amazing spectacle. Its started with some New Holland Honeyeaters having a “discussion”.

Then things seemed to heat up a bit. It then turned into a full scale fight.

Eventually things started to settle down.

This was an incredible thing to witness. We speculated why they were fighting. Perhaps they were two separate flocks fighting over territory? Or perhaps the flock as trying to encourage the young to leave? Or was it a fight between rivals trying to work their way up the pecking order?

We continued on our way.

In the coastal heath, we spotted another pair of Rock Warblers. One of them stopped long enough to get some photos.

Some Fringe Lilies were out.

We were getting closer to Curracurrong and Eagle Rock.

Here is Eagle Rock from a few angles.

On the walk back we spotted some Bar-shouldered Doves.

And back close to Wattamolla – A Hyacinth Orchid.
