Walk at Tempe and Barton Park – 20 April 2020

For my exercise I caught a bus to Tempe then did a walk visiting the Tempe Wetlands, then the wastelands near the Golf Firing Range and Container Terminal, then around Tempe Reserve. Then another short bus trip to Barton Park for the second lot of exercise.

On my walk, I encountered a fair number of birds. The Wetlands at Tempe were very quiet. Hardly any birds in the trees or in the ponds. It wa also quiet as I made my way along the track through the wastelands. Again it was quiet, until I got to near the landing lights for the airport – the lights for the main runway. Here I saw a number of small birds . They included a Nutmeg Manikin, a Brown Honeyeater, Red-browed Finches and Silvereyes.

I was busy photographing these, when I was interrupted. I had noticed a Black-Shouldered Kite perched on a fence. I got some nice photos of it perched and as it flew off.

It flew to one of the landing lights where it perched. I waited a fair while, and it took off again.

This time it perched on another fence, sloe to where I would have to walk. I slowly walked closer and got a few more photos.

I then continued along the water pipeline path to Tempe Reserve.

A Pied Cormorant was perched on a stick. It took off and then started fishing. I watched it, hoping i would catch a fish.

I followed it down the Alexandria Canal, but this took me closer to a Striated Heron standing on the bank. As I got closer, it took off.

I then spotted a pair of Red-rumped Parrots.

Then a commotion broke out. A lot of the birds seemed alarmed. I looked up and soon spotted a Peregrine Falcon zooming past. I was lucky to get a few shots of it.

I continue on my way around Tempe Reserve. I next spotted a White-faced Heron. nearby where a pair of Little Black Cormorants.

The Heron then took off and moved into the bay.

A Caspian Tern flew past.

I then made my way to the bus stop and caught a bus to Banksia and got off at Barton Park. I walked over to Landing Lights Wetland. I soon spotted an Egret and a Striated Heron.

A White-faced Heron was coming in to land.

The Striated Heron took off and flew over to the peninsula.

Here is one of the Black-fronted Dotterels.

Then two Great Egrets  took off –

The second was more cumbersome –

Nearby were some small birds – a Superb Fairy-wren and a Yellow-rumped Thronbill.

More Dotterels were out on the mudflats.

On the building, a Common Myna was perched on an antenna. It was being harassed by a Willie Wagtail.

Meanwhile a Laughing Kookaburra was minding its own business.

I then ade my way through the mangroves and up to the higher level. Not too action, so I continued towards Muddy Creek. In the Lantana were a lot of small birds – Silvereyes, Red-rumped Finches and Superb Fairy-wrens.

I went back down to the wetland level. A White-faced Heron was cruising past.

And a few last photos  – Welcome Swallows and another White-faced Heron.
