Fungi at Ferndale Park and the Lane Cove Valley – 2 June 2020

I spent an interesting day searching for and photographing fungi at Ferndale Park at Chatswood, and then walking down to the Lane Cove River and walking upstream to check out another site.

The fungi at Ferndale Park was quite nice. I was pleased to see the undescribed Ferndale Park Waxcap was out in small numbers (I found two). Here are some photos –

This one is likely to be Humidicutis sp. It starts off green with yellow gills. As it develops, the cap flattens and often develops and umbo, and if conditions are right, it turns pink. The cap also starts to split.

There were a reasonable amount of other waxcaps out. Here are some –

Hygrocybe sp.

Hygrocybe reesiae

Hygrocybe griseoramosa

Hygrocybe sp.

Hygrocybe anomola

There were also a lot of corals and clubs out. Here is a selection –

And some of the other fungi at Ferndale Park –

I then walked down to the Lane Cove River, stopped for lunch, and continued walking upstream on the far side. I soon reached a site that I had visited not long before, and was on the lookout for the Parrot Waxcaps. I soon found them –

These are the waxcaps that I think are Gliophorus psitacinus var. psittacinus.

Amongst them was this beautiful pink waxcap. I think it is Hygrocybe roseoflavida

And, nearby were some Hygrocybe austropratensis

This small area also has a lots of coral fungi. Here are some –

And some Marasmius elegans coming up –

There were also a lot of Corybas Orchids

I left that area and walked out to Macquarie Park Station. On the way I photographed a few more corals growing near the road –

The colours and structures are amazing! I need to look harder when I’m out walking.
