Malabar Headland – 24 July 2020

This was a pleasant day, spent mostly sitting in the sun enjoying the view, as the birds and whales were relatively quiet.

When I reached  the Peregrine Falcon nesting site, I spotted one of the birds perched on a high ledge, and only partly visible.

I later came back and spotted a Peregrine Falcon perched on a closer ledge.

I am not sure if this was the other Falcon of the pair, or the original one and it had moved. I decided to wait in the area, and see if one of the Falcons would return with food. I spent some time whale watching. I did see a number of whales – but all were distant and some of the pods seemed to be travelling south and others north. None of the whales were breaching or tail slapping.

Some of the other birds nearby –

New Holland Honeyeaters

Crested Terns

This one has small fish.

Gannets

There were quite a few people about enjoying the park. Here are some on Magic Point –

At one point I did see both Peregrine Falcons fly in quickly to under the cliffs below where I was having lunch. I looked along the cliffs but could not locate either of them. Perhaps they had gone to the nest area? Later, I saw one of the Peregrine Falcons fly past. It seemed to be looking to see if its mate was around. It flew past the nest area, then turned and flew back the other way, and at the same time cleaning its talons.

I started walking out around 3:30 pm. I went slowly looking for birds or more whales. I saw nothing of note.
