Cooks River Tawny Frogmouth Update – 15 November 2020

On my way home form Nurragingy Reserve, I got off the train at Canterbury and walked home from there via the Cooks River. I had heard that the Tawny Frogmouth chicks at the Boat Harbour had fledged.

Sure enough, when I arrived, I found them well away from the nest. One of the chicks was high up the tree by itself and the other was sitting near its father.

The female was sitting in its usual spot.

On may way along the river path, I found some more nice birds. Here is a Grey Butcherbird

And a bird, that I don’t see too often along the River – a Sacred Kingfisher.

And a Willie Wagtail sitting on a nest –

At Younger Avenue, I looked at the nesting pair of Tawny Frogmouths there. No real change from what I could see, however the male sitting on then nest did seem more restless than usual.

Here is the female, perched in a close tree.

Then watching the male again, I heard it make a funny noise – a bit like a choke – perhaps it was coughing up a pellet?

Thanks to the people who have commented on this blog about the status of the Tawny Frogmouths.
