I joined Brian Everingham and party from the National Parks Association of NSW for a visit to some wetland areas for World Wetlands Day.
We visited three sites on the day. The first was the Boat Harbour Aquatic Reserve at Kurnell. This is accessed from the Potter Point Road. After parking at the end, we set off south along the coast.
Here are two Jacky Dragons we saw –
And now at the Boat Harbour –
Some passing Cormorants –
Great Cormorant
Pied CormorantÂ
We then walked to the south side and ventured out onto the rocks. We were a bit disappointed that we saw no migratory wading birds. Perhaps too many people around?
Little Black Cormorants
Pied Oystercatcher
Sooty Oystercatchers
Crested Tern
Caspian Tern
Pelican
Great Cormorant
There was also a large party from the Cumberland Bird Observers –
By the time we left, the number of four wheel drivers was incredible –
Walking back along the coast, we spotted some more birds.
Pacific Gull
Sooty OystercatchersÂ
Great Cormorant
We then visited the Greenhills Wetlands near Cronulla.
Hardhead
Pacific Black Duck
Australian Swamphen chick –
Eastern Long-necked Turtle
Australasian Grebe
Our last stop was at the Woolooware Shared Path near Taren Point.
Here we saw a large number of Grey-tailed Tattlers roosting during high tide on an old pier.
Pelicans
Thanks to Brian for organising the activity, and for a lift.
