Fungi at Birdwood Gully – 2 January 2021

I headed up to Springwood with the intention of checking out the fungi in Sassafras Gully. It is very early in the fungi season, but there has been good rain recently and I though thee should be some out. However, when I arrived, it was raining lightly, so I decided to visit Birdwood Gully instead.

Both gullies do offer some shelter – in sandstone overhangs, but Birdwood Gully is a much shorter walk in and out.

The rain did interfere with photography a bit, but it held off enough for me to spot and photograph some reasonable fungi.  Here are some of what I found –

Cyptotrama asprata

Russula rosea

Russula sp.

Hygrocybe miniata

Jelly Fungus

Toothed Jelly – Pseudohydnum gelatinosum

Mycena sp.

These polypores were growing at the base of a tree. Perhaps Polyporus melanopus.

I am not sure what this one is –

A slime mould – Ceratiomyxa fruticulosa

Here is a Bolete – Tylopilus ballouii.

And it was good to see the return of this Gompus sp. It is an unusual species that pops up in the same place each season. In its early stage is weeps droplets and stains blue.

This Gomphus should develop over the next few weeks. I have only ever seen it at this location in Birdwood Gully and at a similar spot in Sassafras Gully. It will look quite different when fully grown.

And some tiny Chatrerelles. Cantherellus concinnus.

Cruentomycena viscidocruenta

And here is a Yellow Monday cicada –

The rain became heavier, so I headed out early – before lunch. A short visit but worthwhile.
