Birds at Sydney Park – 23 September 2021

Day 89 of lockdown. With a slight relaxation of lockdown regulations, I was able to enjoy a day at Sydney park with both Sue and Valerie. We had a very please day, catching up, walking around the beautiful park and spending some time looking for and observing birds.

Like some previous visits, we observed a lot of baby birds. Lats visit, Valerie and myself had seen a pair of Dusky Moorhens with four chicks. All chicks seem to be doing well.

And there are more Australasian Grebes at the park. At least four now.

And here is one of the Black Swan cygnets. They now seem able to do short flights.

Here is a Little Pied Cormorant

This Pacific Black Duck is adopting a low profile to creep up to another.

Another is chased away. Perhaps a love rival?

A Magpie Lark is returning with food for its chicks.

We spotted the nest last week. The chicks now look almost ready to fledge.

In the large pond we spotted several turtles. Here is one –

And there were also some rather large eels.

One of the eels made its way over to lurk near some reeds, close to where the Moorhen chicks were. We watched to see if the eel would try and take a chick.

The eel did not seem to attempt to grab a chick. But when we spotted the Pacific Black Duck chicks we noticed that their number had gone down from four to two.

And some courtship action from these Dusky Moorhens

And I finished with some shots of some of the Noisy Miners having very quick baths in the pond.

It was a nice day out, beautiful weather, and really good to be able to get together with friends.
