Cooks River Birds – 10 October 2021

Day 106 of Lockdown. The last day of the full lockdown!! The weather forecast was not the best, so I decided on a short local walk, and then I could join Valerie, Deb and Peter for lunch near the Cooks River. A nice way to spend a day.

I walked down to the Cooks River and crossed the Lang Street Bridge and then slowly walked upstream keeping my eyes open for birds. Here are some I saw –

Willie Wagtail

Red Wattlebird

I watch this bird hunting for insects.

The Red Wattlebird was hunting near the bush regenerated area near the Foord Street Bridge. It was good to see some Superb Fairy-wrens here.

The Red Wattlebird was still hunting.

And nearby was an Olive-backed Oriole

At the Boat Harbour, I soon located both Tawny Frogmouths.

I then crossed the river and continued up to the Cup and Saucer Creek Wetlands. At the wetlands, I take to two girls, who were out walking. They were going to show me where a Turtle was resting, but by the time we looked for it, it had gone back into the water. We talked about local birds and they told me they had seen one of the Younger Avenue Tawny Frogmouths. It had been in a tree a short way downstream of its old perch. I would later look for it. Meanwhile, at the wetlands, I saw a few Australasian Swamphens with their chicks –

Heading back downstream on the south bank, I looked for the Tawny Frogmouth but could not spot it.

Here is a Rainbow Lorikeet

And a Little Black Cormorant

And a Magpie Lark sitting on its nest –
