I don’t normally visit Malabar Headland at this time of the year. The Peregrine Falcons are scarce and no whales are around. But I had read that the trackwork was complete and I wanted to see what it was like.
So I spent most of a day out on the headland. I walked in this visit from Maroubra and it was good to see the headland from this angle rather than the shorter but more boring walk from Malabar.
The trackwork is very impressive. For me it is overkill with all the boardwalk, hand rails and benches. But this track can be very popular and the heath vegetation and the sandy soils can be easily damaged.
And here is some Nature –
Red Wattlebirds –
Copper Skink –
Jacky Dragon –
Crested Tern –
And some scenery.
It was great to be able to visit these places again after a long closure. I didn’t see any Peregrine Falcons this visit. I did see one raptor close to the start flying over the rifle range but it didn’t stay around long enough for a photo. An no Dolphins. I spent a fair bit of time sitting in a shady cave reading., waiting to see if anything would turn up.
Hi Dave I saw Sue, Valerie & you on Monday & I watched for a while but was leaving when they mated. I was there today around 1.15 & observed the female on the rock where the male was on Monday. The female was making noises but nothing happened for a while & then the male turned up & I saw them mate. It was amazing to witness & then the male went to nesting area. I actually had my SLR but too engrossed to think about photographing.
I appreciate the information you have given me bout these fascinating birds.
Regards Alana
It was good to meet you again out on the headland. I’m about to write up the trip from last Monday.
