Greenway Bird Survey – 13 April 2022

It was the morning for the bird survey along the Hawthorne Canal section of the Greenway. The group met at Taverners Hill Light Rail Station at 7:30 am.

The survey went very well. We observed quite a few interesting birds.

Here are some that we saw from Taverners Hill Light Rail Station.

Silvereye

Willie Wagtail

Brown Goshawk

Spotted Pardalote

It was quieter along the path/cycleway. Here is a Red Wattlebird

Near Marion St, we observed this large Slime Mould. It is Dog’s Vomit Slime Mould (Fuligo septica)

We were looking out for the Sacred Kingfisher that a few of us had observed along this section of the canal recently – but not on surveys. We spotted it perched in the last tree before the footbridge.

Then as were about to cross the footbridge, we noticed a lot of feral pigeons in the air and a lot of alarm calls. We looked up and spotted another Brown Goshawk.

It was being harassed by a Magpie.

It was amazing to observe this skirmish. The Goshawk eventually disappeared down the canal.

The last bird we observed was a Laughing Kookaburra

We then had morning tea at the cafe in the Dog area. After the group broke up, I walked back to the canal near the footbridge to see if the Kingfisher or Goshawk had returned. No Goshawk, but I did see the Sacred Kingfisher. Here are some more photos –

Here it is about to cough up pellet.

It had been a good morning. It was now time to head home for lunch.
