Barton Park Birds – 28 May 2022

After the Greenway Bird Survey, I joined fellow Greenway Birders, Michael and Lennis, and headed to Barton Park. We spent the rest of the day there and observed a good range of bird species.

When we arrived, we headed to the Landing Lights Wetland. A Brown Goshawk flew past, being harassed by Magpies.

It was the Brown Goshawk with the bad talon. It flew off.

White-faced Heron

Red-whiskered Bulbul

Wasp

Chestnut Teal chick

White-faced Herons

Little Black Cormorant

We then walked around some of the periphery and up near the old stadium.

Red-browed Finch

Brown Goshawk

The Goshawk shot past at high speed. I was lucky to get a few photos. It was a different one to the one we had seen earlier.

Grey Fantail – hunting for insects –

Back at the wetlands – a family of Chestnut Teals –

Back on top, a Laughing Kookaburra

White-plumed Honeyeater

Golden-headed Cisticola

A Striated Heron was hunting a long way up the Spring Street Canal –

WE then headed to the old sporting fields. A Nankeen Kestrel was hunting –

We stayed to watch the Kestrel.

Its always amazing to watch these raptors hover.

Then a Brown Goshawk appeared. It was a fair way off.

The Nankeen Kestrel flew off to attack the much larger Brown Goshawk –

The Brown Goshawk left the area. The Kestrel resumed its hunting.

It suddenly dived down out of sight and reappeared with a mouse.

I think it may have stored the mouse somewhere, as it flew off without it.

This time it has caught a small insect.

We then headed to the Cooks River to see if we could spot the Osprey. We had no luck. Here are a pair of Pied Cormorants

Back at the Wetlands, a Great Egret was hunting.

This time it did better!

The we saw a Double-barred Finch.

And some Silvereyes

Here is a pair of Chestnut Teals

A White-faced Heron flew down and started hunting.

A New Holland Honeyeater had also caught something, an insect –

We decided to walk over and see if the Kestrel was still around. On the way as saw a Yellow Thornbill

The Nankeen Kestrel was still there, and still hunting.

It reappeared with the mouse (or was it a new one?)

Back at the Wetlands – some White-faced Herons

And a last photo of some New Holland Honeyeaters

Thanks to Michael and Lennis for great company on the day, and to Michael for driving us there.
